Program Notes: Lullabies/Nocturnes for Vibraphone, Op. 39 was composed between 2018 and 2019 for percussionist James Beauton. The cycle of six movements were written while anticipating the birth of my son, Dorian Avedis GIanopoulos. The purposes of lullabies vary - they are often used for the development of communication skills, indication of emotional intent, maintenance of infants' undivided attention, and regulation of behavior. However, perhaps one of the most important uses of lullabies is as a sleep aid for infants. Coupled with the nocturne, this cycle intends to serve the primordial awareness of youth.  There are recurring motives and musical gestures that occur through all six movements, but each pair of lullaby and nocturne more intensely explore a unique harmonic, intervallic or melodic landscape. Colorful boxes permeate the score that echoes elements of the sheet music cover to maintain the musician’s attention and create visual and aural connections for the performer and allows them to connect to the music in a visceral way.  Though intended for the twilight, it is hoped that these lullabies and nocturnes rouse dormant fervor and lull one into slumber.
